Continental Divide Trail: The End + Reflections
Day 152: September 8th, 2025 Forward progress: 20.7 miles Total distance on trail: 2,391.6 miles Our plan to be hiking by 7:00 was immediately thwarted by... you guessed it... rain. It started drizzling around 5:30, pouring by 6:00. None of us were interested in starting our last day in those conditions, so we shouted through the walls of our tents at each other that none of us were going to start packing until the rain let up. By the time we had originally planned to leave,

Continental Divide Trail: Days 140-151
Day 140 Forward progress: 21.1 miles Total distance on trail: 2,165.3 miles Well, I slept terribly. Not sure why. Perhaps the soda I had at dinner? But that's not unusual while I'm in towns, so I'm not sure why it impacted me so badly last night. I got under 5 hours of sleep, which is not ideal. But whatever. The guy who gave us a ride to Augusta also gave us a ride back to the trail. The drive was just as overstimulating as before -- despite changing seats, the dog still cho

Continental Divide Trail: Days 129 - 139
Day 129 Forward progress: 10.0 miles Total distance on trail: 1,952.9 miles It would have been so easy to stay in town another day. There are so many ways to exit Butte, one of which would cut off 25 miles -- a full day, if we wanted to. But we didn't. We did only have a short day planned today, so we hung around town until around 2:00. Vibes and I hoped to get Bushwhack and Zoolander to come out with us, but they wanted another day in town and are planning a different route

![‼️ SOLO CAMPING/BACKPACKING SAFETY TIPS ‼️
It took me a long time to be comfortable with backpacking and camping solo, and honestly, I still don't totally love it, but there are some ways I can assuage some basic fears. Nothing and nowhere is 100% without risk, but there are ways to make solo camping safer!
Here are 4 ways I protect myself from people and wildlife:
[SAVE this video for your summer camping trips!]
🆘 I carry a satellite communication device.
There are many kinds, but I've always used some kind of @garmin inReach, and I've never been let down. I make sure it's charged and connected to a subscription plan before I leave. With my inReach, I can send messages without being connected to cell signal, and if I found myself in real trouble, hitting the SOS button would dispatch a message to nearby emergency services.
🌀 I carry pepper spray in an accessible location.
If I were in grizzly bear country, I'd carry bear spray instead. I don't carry any weapons for a variety of reasons.
🤷🏻♀️ I lie about everything.
It's a fun exercise in improv, actually. Nobody needs to know if I'm alone, or where I'm going, or what my plans are. If being vague isn't working, if someone keeps pressing for answers, LIE. You don't owe anyone the truth.
🐻 Store your food properly away from your tent.
Mitigating unwanted animal encounters often comes down to everybody properly storing their food. Animals that associate human-occupied campsites with accessible food learn to spend time in those areas and become habituated to human presence. Sometimes, aggressive animals are relocated to other areas, but they often are euthanized. They say "a fed bear is a dead bear," and it's not just because they lose their food gathering instincts. I always use a @bearvault canister to keep my food safe, not just from bears, but also from unwanted critters.
If you have any questions, PLEASE drop them! I'd love to have a (civil) conversation in the comments if you're interested in learning more about staying safe while camping alone.](https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/v/t51.82787-15/719939641_18044589086783767_2969724606068893520_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_tt6&_nc_cat=106&ccb=7-5&_nc_sid=18de74&efg=eyJlZmdfdGFnIjoiQ0xJUFMuYmVzdF9pbWFnZV91cmxnZW4uQzMifQ%3D%3D&_nc_ohc=VGEMpcp1PfMQ7kNvwG-shrj&_nc_oc=Adr07DbU8XNSMKqF72hV-NbIsrbpY23BG6igvTDSRMR7OaYuOS6TXJ2j1YDM-xhnHqQ&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent.cdninstagram.com&edm=ANo9K5cEAAAA&_nc_gid=w0NgpIiJ2ZBBfgahml2yUQ&_nc_tpa=Q5bMBQEy4Jms5emMYSmLeTd3sNy4UtyM7NroPBOPbxzJiKOdnvNuczkjHnKkZ_1NgkFq8jxbvfnWm9MN&oh=00_Af9xI6re4QGX5jrC-0Ml2-kCpJrGqJYfrVUr5fw126QX0w&oe=6A2EEEA8)
